Excavation Calculator
Estimate excavation volume, handling and hauling allowances.
How this calculator works
ProjectCost uses your measurements, quantity assumptions and editable unit prices to produce a first-pass planning estimate.
Why your final cost may differ
Site conditions, local labor, delivery, permits, access, material availability, project specifications and contractor scope can materially change an installed project price.
Keep planning
Combine this result with other scopes in the Project Planner.

Connect excavation to the driveway
For a new access road or driveway, pair excavation with clearing, base work and the finished surface.
Questions people ask before estimating
What is excavation volume?
For a simple rectangular excavation, volume is length × width × average depth. Real sites may require sloped sides, over-excavation, rock removal or different depths, so treat the result as an early planning quantity.
Does excavation include hauling?
The calculator keeps haul/disposal as a separate editable allowance so you can see how much of the budget comes from digging versus moving material off site.
What about ledge or rock?
Rock excavation can require different equipment and disposal assumptions. Do not rely on the standard soil rate when rock or ledge is known or suspected.
Turn the estimate into a project budget
Use the Project Planner to keep site work, materials, labor and allowances visible as your scope changes.
Site preparation budget
Combine clearing, excavation, grading, drainage and access allowances in one planning estimate.
