Driveway Cost Calculator

Compare gravel, asphalt, concrete and pavers for your driveway size, including site-prep and mobilization allowances.

Editable rates

How to use it

Measure the driveway from the road to the parking or garage area. Enter the width, add a realistic site-prep allowance, then compare the surface options. For a new rural driveway, consider excavation, drainage, base stone and culverts separately.

Useful next steps

After comparing surfaces, use the dedicated calculators for gravel or asphalt and combine the result with your other site-work allowances in the Project Planner.

Driveway cost planning guide

The biggest budgeting mistake is treating the visible surface as the entire driveway. A new driveway can also require clearing, excavation, drainage, geotextile fabric, compacted base, trucking, grading and finish material. Published 2026 calculators and cost guides show wide ranges because those underlying scopes vary substantially.

Common questions

Questions people ask before estimating

What size driveway should I enter?

Enter the actual footprint you expect to build. If the driveway has a turnaround, parking pad, or widened section, calculate those areas separately and add them to the main driveway area.

Does this include excavation?

The calculator lets you add site preparation as a separate allowance. For a new driveway on wooded or uneven land, excavation, drainage, unsuitable-soil removal and base construction may need separate estimates.

Are the rates contractor quotes?

No. The surface rates are editable planning assumptions. Replace them with current supplier or contractor pricing for your area as your project becomes defined.

Why can two driveways with the same area cost very differently?

Access, grade, drainage, soil conditions, existing pavement, base requirements, haul distance and site preparation can change the scope substantially even when the finished area is identical.
